Why is animal behaviour and welfare research important?

The Animal Behaviour and Welfare Research Group has expertise in several research areas. These include designing and conducting applied animal behaviour and related research to assess the welfare of a wide variety of captive animal species in a range of different environments (including farms, zoos and companion animal settings).

They also have expertise in studying the effects on animal behaviour and welfare of making different modifications and enrichments to captive animal environments. Where required, the group collaborate with other researchers, both internally or externally, to help deliver research project objectives.

As well as primary research, they also have experience in conducting literature reviews on topics relating to animal behaviour and welfare. They have experience of conducting research funded by a variety of funders, including government, charities and commercial companies, with experience of research projects across a wide range of scales, from small scale pilot studies through to multi-year research programmes.
