Richard brings over 25 years of experience as a Pracademic (Practical Academic) in land management and food security. His career has taken him to challenging environments such as Afghanistan, Angola, Nigeria, and Zambia, where he has worked on both policy and livelihoods projects within the Human Security space. Over the past 15 years, Richard has focused on advancing Stabilisation Agriculture and developing integrated livelihood solutions in conflict-affected and post-conflict countries to promote food security and economic growth. His current work is centred on climate (in)security and food systems, exploring ways to mitigate impacts.
With a specialist interest in the Black Sea region, Richard's lecturing focuses on agricultural policy, global food commodities trade, and their intersections with geopolitics and climate change. In addition to his teaching and research, Richard advises various UK government departments, commercial organisations, and NGOs on the interface of food security, climate change, and conflict. He is also a visiting Research Associate at a number of UK and overseas universities.
