Advent Day 4: Our four academic departments

    4 December 2022

Here are Harper Adams, our staff and work streams are split into four academic departments – supported by a vast range of professional service teams who deliver everything non-academic, such as student support services.

    Agricultural and Environment
comprises a large team of specialists from crop and environment sciences, livestock sciences and farm business management. The department’s name underlines the agricultural heritage of Harper Adams whilst recognising the increased emphasis on environmental matters that will emerge in farming and food production in the years ahead.

    Animal Health, Behaviour and Welfare
drives the development of courses and research to support the animal health and welfare sciences. The Department comprises three sections: Veterinary Nursing; Veterinary Physiotherapy; and Animal Behaviour and Welfare.  Meanwhile Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degrees are delivered independently by the Harper & Keele Veterinary School, which maintains close links with the Department. This is vital for the emphasis on interprofessional education, which enables students from allied veterinary and animal sciences subject areas to learn together.

    Food, Land and Agribusiness Management
This Department supports the development of sustainable agri-food and rural businesses through a firm focus on future skills development, enterprise assistance and research. The department deliver the new food and business routes alongside the well-established Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors-accredited degrees in land and property management, including Rural Enterprise and Land Management, which has been taught at Harper Adams for more than 30 years and continues to evolve with the sector to deliver outstanding rural land management professionals. The REALM programme is complemented by routes in Rural Property Management and Real Estate.

    Engineering
At Harper Adams, our routes in Agricultural Engineering, Off Highway Automotive Engineering and Mechanical Engineering develop students into highly sought-after engineers. Harper graduates work in many industries and roles on a huge range of projects such as designing autonomous agricultural machines, developing composite materials technology and even teaching the next generation of engineers. New sectors and challenges continue to emerge. Underpinning this department’s teaching is a host of cutting-edge research.

And remember – at Harper Adams we work as one – so modules, projects and a wide range of other activity will span multiple, and sometimes all, of our departments working together to develop the solutions the world needs.
